HTC has added the final chapter in the HTC Desire Android update saga; the file is now available to download.

The Taiwanese phone giant has had to squeeze the Android Gingerbread (2.3) upgrade to fit it into the ageing HTC Desire, and this has meant several apps will disappear if you install the new version.

Fear not; they can be reinstalled from the Android market, but this will include HTC’s own apps and the Facebook app. Conversely, you'll also lose all the phone network customisations and bloaty apps added to the phone; it's a double-edged sword.

Early this year, HTC promised that the Desire would benefit from another Android update, having already received the the step up to Android Froyo in 2010.

Then, HTC announced that it wasn’t going to get it. After the ensuing internet outrage, HTC backtracked and said that, again, the Desire would be getting the Gingerbread upgrade, but that there would have to be sacrifices. Upgrading the phone itself is similar to a factory rest; expect to lose all your customisations, text messages and contact- if you haven’t backed-up on your Google account.

There is also a but from HTC. It adds: “This Rom update is for development only and not for general public use. Upgrades to non-authorized phones may result in loss of functionality. In addition certain functions may no longer be usable after re-flashing the ROM, including but not limited to MMS and SMS and HTC also disclaims liability for any unusable functions”
