Switching over a Verizon phone to Cricket service

My friend is giving me a Verizon phone and I don't know the exact name of the phone but I do know it is a PDA or Smartphone. So my question is is it possible to convert any Verizon phone over to Cricket service? I am new to this but if any one would mind taking the time to tell me how to do it I think I could figure it out. I am most of the part computer savey. Thanks

Yes, practically any Verizon phone can be made to work with Cricket. The trick is getting the Cricket PRL onto the phone. PRL stands for Preferred Roaming List: It is a small text file that can be written to the phone's internal memory that tells it what network to operate on.

This primarily involves two steps: Registering the phone's ESN number with Cricket, then dailing *228 on the handset.

If that doesn't work, you more than likely will have to load a Cricket PRL onto the phone manually using a computer and data cable or memory card, depending on the type of phone it is.

This will only get you voice calling and text messaging, mind you. In order to get Picture Messaging and Mobile Web to work requires addtional, more advance steps.

To learn more about "flashing" Verizon phones to Cricket, try the Cricket subforum over at Howard Forums. It has an excellent FAQ sticked at the top that should get you started.

    Good hunting!
