Question Data enabled phones by Cricket?

May be this is a silly question but bear with me as I am trying to understand the technology.

I read the following post as I am trying to use my razr phone as a modem with my dialup isp:

    "Mobile Phone Scripts
Before using the mobile phone scripts below, check that your airtime provider has enabled data access for your phone - many networks disable it by default. If data access is not enabled, you will always get a 'no carrier' result from Remote Access."

    http://www.taniwha.org.uk/

Well, this is exactly what is happening to me, I am getting a no carrier signal all the time, although all parameters seem to be ok and the phone is dialing, so my question is: are Cricket phones data-enabled by default? Bidirectionally?

With no data plan, I know I can receive text messages because I get them all the time from Cricket, but of course I cannot send them or browse the web (makes sense because I don't have a data plan). Does this imply that data access is enabled? Or perhaps is enabled only one way?

If data access is not enabled by default (or is not both ways), can data access be enabled without necessarily getting a data plan? I can visualize a situation where someone may need temporarily a data enabled phone abroad but not in the USA, for example. It would be unfair to block such a phone for data.

I would use modem access only every once in a while, so I can bear with the slow speed of 14.4K just to check email or check a specific website through my own dialup isp, but apparently a data enabled phone is needed and I am not sure I got one!

Thanks to all for your help!

    Unhappy Crippled phones?

I talked to Motorola, they say that Verizon sells the V3c to Cricket without the needed AT commands to function as a modem. Verizon customers can do it, but not Cricket customers? Why???

They said, if I understood correctly, that Verizon customers can download these AT commands through GetItNow. Do we have a similar option with Cricket?

Motorola said to talk to Cricket to install these commands, but last time I talk to Technical Support they didn't know the phone could be used as a modem!

I am not feeling very hopeful today...

If anybody knows anything about this issue I would appreciate it.

    Thanks,
    Alejandro
