Here is My HowTo for Samsung Instinct Wap

I had already written this in another thread, after seeing how many folks were wanting the cricket web to work on their samsung instinct, but there were so many who said it wouldnt work...
So I decided to put My How To in its own thread to get better exposure...




You will need Cricket PRL ,CDMA Workshop and QPST and the samsung modem drivers for this...
Please search,, they are easy to find...

Install Cdma workshop, and Qpst if you havent already...
Now install the modem drivers for your instinct,,,

Remove your memory card if you have one in the phone.. and plug your phone in to your computer...
after driver installation right click on mycomputer, go to properties,, go to device manager,,, look under com ports,, double click on samsung com port to bring its properties up and find out the com port number and remember it..

now go into cdma workshop and select the comport that the phone is on,, click connect,, then once connected click QCDM for Qualcomm DM Mode,,, after a few seconds your phone info should pop up on the left side,,,

go to security tab,, click read spc,, your six digit spc should pop up,,, click send spc,, it should say phone unlocked,,, now replace numbers with six zeros,, then click write spc,, once done then go to other tab,,
under prl click write prl,, search for your cricket prl and pow it should say written..

once done move on to the next steps...


After Changing your spc to 000000
and flashing the Cricket prl to the phone...
do the esn change through cricket..
perform *228 and get all things updated...

after this go back to Qpst and read the phone..
once you read the phone.. go to m.ip and change from mobile ip to simple ip only,,, and look at the first 2 user profiles under m.ip open each one up and change the Nai to 10DigitNumber@mycricket.com,, for both standard and tethered...
remove any ip address that you find in these 2 profiles. and remove any other profiles except the first 2.
also make sure both of them say enabled...,,

now go to ppp config...
look at the tabs that say um and an... under these 2 tabs,, the user id should be 10DigitNumber@Mycricket.com tethered id should be the same,, password is cricket in lowercase on both tabs,, remove any dns ip address you find in either tab also. just make sure all ip address are blank.

once you are completed with this,, move on to the next step..

click on phone icon
click on dialer..
enter ##3282#
click user name
click edit
enter your spc which should already be 000000 by now
starting from the top here ya go...

User Name "10DigitNumber@mycricket.com"
SPI MN-HA "1234"
SPI MN-AAA "1234"
M Home Address "066.179.166.148"
Prim Ha Ip "010.000.005.021"
Sec Ha Ip "010.000.005.022"
Rev Tunneling "Off"
AAA Password "cricket"
HA Password "cricket"

click done,, allow the phone to reboot...

Now do ##3282# again.. this time go to browser
click edit
enter spc
youll see gateway1 and gateway2,,, under both of these
you will see primary and secondary,,, set primary and secondary ip`s for both gateways to 172.029.223.007,, they will all be the same ip address,, and set the Port and secure Port for all gatways to 8080,, hit done reboot and padow.. there you go...

I have tried to make this as clear As I can,, If you have any issues,, start all over... and start from the top...

Also this should work on quite a few other Sprint phones,,
This is what I do for a living at the wireless company I work for,, and so far it has worked on Samsung upstage, Instinct,, Sanyo katana, and many others,,,

I replied to your pm,, but I will put some info here for everyone..

The broswer on this phone has a registration system,,
in order for the browser to even come up it checks that it has been registered with sprint...

so if it has not ever been activated then everytime you try to bring up the browser it will get stuck saying that it is trying to check your account...

if this happens let me know I can try to walk you through what I did,, it is quite a process,, but I can try to help..

Ok to all the folks that have a new phone or have hard reset the phone,, these settings will absolutely not get your browser past the provisioning state,, if your browser is trying to set up vision services and hangs,, it is because of this.. ill try to explain..

You see I reset the phone when I got it.. like a moron.. and after resetting it I never could get the browser to come up again,, it kept trying to update my account...
so here is what the deal is,, and how I think I got it back...

your browser doesnt know if you have your ppp settings installed or not..
it basically uses a policy,,

when the phone is new,, or reset,, when you open the browser it opens up a hidden NAI application in the background to provision your Sprint vision account,,, once the vision is updated,, it writes to the browser policy telling it it is complete,, then the browser will boot on its own without checking your vision data service... but this will not work on cricket since it is not on sprints vision service...
Sooooooooo... if this is your case... then following the steps Ive provided,,, start from the beginning,, but this time start clean,, go into qpst and clear all account info and ip address`s from M.IP and PPP config... then start from the very beginning and add it all back in,,,

then when completed , go to phone,, do the ##brew# enter spc
then youll see a bunch of little icons,, tap each one once while looking at the bottom of the screen,,, look until you see something that just says browser,, double click on this icon,, it may try to bring up your browser,, once you do this, back out and go back to brew and look for the icon that says sde_app there are a couple that say sde,, but use the one that says SDE_APP,, double tap on this it should bring up a list of like Start sde:addr start sde:mailto etc..
click on start sde:http and then I think you click browse,, the browser may or may not come up when you click this,, but i did this and after exiting brew it no longer tried to verify account,, it just brought the browser up properly like it should,, I dont know if it was a coincidence or what but it got it back..

Well seeing as your phone was never activated,,, that would mean that the policy for the vision service would have never been populated... so this may be a problem...

I would say start all over again,, if it still doesnt work,, then we may just have to say that this will only work on previously activated sprint phones...

but Im sure it should work...

In your case,, if you have a friend that is with sprint... you may see if he could get them to do an esn swap to your phone.. allow it to completely provision... then esn swap his old phone back,,, then your phone should have all the sprint provisioning thus allowing you to start changing the settings to cricket...

Just a thought...

Yes it does.

Ok... if your phone is not stuck anymore in the provisioning,,, then go into the ##data# and put in what you know about pocket,, aka,, enter username and password,,, and on all proxies and gateways and ha ip address`s clear them out to zeros,,, that way all the phone has is your user name and pass,,,

then go to ##degubmenu# enter your spc,,, scroll town to toggle Nai,, turn it off...

now reboot,,

Now on your computer,, disable your wifi or pull out your network cable so that your pc is offline,,,

pull out your memory card on your phone,,,

plug the phone into your pc,,, once it is installed as a modem,,

then goto internet explorer and click on tools/internet options/connections

set up a new dial up connection under internet explorer to dial #777 then enter your user name and password,, then go into proxy settings and set up the wap proxy in there,,

after completing this,,

allow your pc to dial up the new connection through the phone,,,

once it connects,, then

go to start and run on your pc,, type command and hit enter...

you should now have a dos screen,,,

this is where you are going to resolve the wap host name down to an ip address,,,

I dont know what the wap host name is for pocket,, but for the sake of this I will call it wap.pocket.com

so in dos you would type something like

tracert wap.pocket.com and hit enter,,,

it will trace its way through all gateways until it ends at the last destination which shoulc be wap.pocket.com and it will give you an ip address for it...

write down this number,,, and keep it...

now you will need to either search for on the net or get a pocket phone and get from the Home address and the pri Ha ip and the secondary Ha ip...

then just start entering the info into the phone,, now the wap ip you just got from dos will go in the gateways

the only thing you will need to know after that is what the gateway/proxy port number is,,

but this should get you started...

I have completed all of the changes with QPST but would you happen to know MetroPCS's wap IP? I have search all over the net and cant find anything. I might have to give the phone as a modem a shot to get it but figured I would ask you first.

I have been pouring over an instinct for the last 3 hours and kept starting from the begining of your thread over and over again with no success. I kept getting connection failed from the browser but it seemed like the phone was connecting just not resolving addresses.

I went over to a computer with an aircard and from a command prompt I used the command nslookup to resolve the address for wap.mycricket.com and it returned 172.28.223.7 (not 172.29.223.7) as the correct address. I am assuming it will be different for each market.

So anyone using this walkthrough without success may need to get on a computer with an aircard and use nslookup to resolve the correct ip for wap.mycricket.com and use the correct ip for their market.

I just got it and made it work,, then as I was searching for some info on cracking the protected nv I ran accross a ton of people wanting to make it work,, and even more people saying it would never happen..
So I figured Id jump in and give it a wirl,,,

And I apologize that I havent really shared on here before,, I had mainy been lurking.. because I dont usually get my rocks off on carrier specific things,,,, My hobby is smartphones and pda phones so I had been hangin out on PPCGeeks.com and XDA-Developers.com but I think ill be spending quite a bit more time here too... so Im glad to meet all of ya guys...

Yes,, sho nuff Yeah the Wap/proxy ip is different by some degree in different markets,, it depends on which routing server your part of the network is connected too... ,, And for all of you reading this,,, the message I posted on page 2 http://www.cricketphonetalk.com/forum/cricket-phone-forum/1317-here-my-howto-samsung-instinct-wap-2.html#post5736 will do the same exact thing for those of you who do not have access to a cricket or metro or pocket air card,,
in that post Im basically getting you to use your phone as the wireless modem.. then you can use nslookup,tracert, or ping to resolve the ip from the host name...

Sprint phones use Picture mail.. and not Multimedia mess...

So probably the most that could ever be done is able to send but not receive...

but I will not say it cant be done.. I hate that phrase..

Shoot even at that you could probably find a java based mms proggie out there that may work.. possibly...

believe it or not I got the instinct working because I had already spent weeks trying to figure out how to make the Katana to work,, the katana was exactly the same,, except in qpst I had to enter all the nai info,, user@mycricket.com and under the dns in m.ip I had to put the proxy and Pri Ha and sec Ha in qpst,, as well as putting it in ##browser# on the phone.. basically doubling up on what has to be put in the phone..

so in other words,, I went into qpst.. entered all this info in its respective places... created my user nai set... then after getting all that plus set to simple ip.. then i rebooted phone,, went into ##browser# and reentered it in there also,, it worked then,,, whereas you dont have to do both on the inscinct,, in fact it corrupts the data on the instinct if you try to enter it both ways...

On quite a few of the katana phones,, its split up with ##data and ##browser,, on some the browser info is under the ##data menu,,, its all the same...

check to make sure the phone roam settings is set to auto not home only,, that may make a difference.. if not flash a different prl

ok, i have managed to configure everything properly and i now have working WAP. there a few things that i cannot do that you guys might be able to assist me on....hopefully...

1.) When i go to mobile youtube i cant watch the video. im not sure if this is a settings issue or a web issue. when i attempt to view something i receive this error: "Media Player Error: Unable to play. Play Aborted" is isnt JUST youtube, its any time i go to view streaming video.

2.) That data indicator (the icon that looks like two arrows, one pointing up and one pointing down, stays on and will not go away. now i noticed that after it stayed on, i no longer got that "preparing data services" message but its just annoying...but if that cant be fixed no biggie.

3.) This is my main concern at the moment: i cant download ringtones. i go to funformobile.com and try to download and it takes me to a white page with only a play button and i can hear it but i cannot download it. bitpim is not an option for me because no matter what i do, when i load bitpim and hook my phone up i get a blue box with white numbers and then all my stuff is erased and i end up having a new SPC and MEID as well as a new and wierd MIN. i end up having to reflash it and its done this twice already. im tired of having to RE config the wap settings...... is there ANY way to get ringtones on my instinct without bitpim?

4.) i looked through the forums and saw that MMS cant work in the instinct but that was a while ago... i also just wanted to kow if thats changed any and if there is any settings that would allow me to send naughty pix to my g/f....(lol t.m.i i know)

ok, i have managed to configure everything properly and i now have working WAP. there a few things that i cannot do that you guys might be able to assist me on....hopefully...

1.) When i go to mobile youtube i cant watch the video. im not sure if this is a settings issue or a web issue. when i attempt to view something i receive this error: "Media Player Error: Unable to play. Play Aborted" is isnt JUST youtube, its any time i go to view streaming video.

2.) That data indicator (the icon that looks like two arrows, one pointing up and one pointing down, stays on and will not go away. now i noticed that after it stayed on, i no longer got that "preparing data services" message but its just annoying...but if that cant be fixed no biggie.

3.) Ok m.youtube.com will not function properly on this phone because the streaming format is not compatible with the media player built into the phone.. even though the broswer is sending the mms (not pix mms,, but multimedia streaming protocol) streaming to it,, It will not connect,, some of the newer instincts are supposed to have a proprietary youtube app on them that works but may not work on cricket wap since it proxies to only allow certain ports to work and the direct connect apps for youtube may use different ports than those allowed..

The data indicator will stay no matter what,, it doesnt mean that it is using data,, this phone merely initiates a connection then puts it on hold, when you go a few minutes of browsing then change pages or something it redials and reinitiates,, but doesnt have to do it fully thus making your data reconnect quicker,, and not eating battery life..

The only one ive found that will work for the instinct is Myxer - Download Ringtones and More (http://www.myxer.com) go there and set up an account,, give them your phone number,, then go into the settings on their site,, and select change sms address,, change it to your10digitnumber@sms.mycricket.com then once done.. you select or upload the ringtone,,, it will send you an sms text message with a link,, you click the link, the browser goes to the page,, you click download,, and the phone will store the ringer into your ringers folder thus allowing you to utilize it...

This phone does not have mms on it.... none of the sprint phones have mms...
mms is (Multimedia Short Messaging) and is used by verizon alltel cricket and some other carriers...
Sprint uses a proprietary Picture mail format, which is not compatible with what you would consider mms,,, so unless someone comes up with a java based mms program that will run on the instinct and be compatible with the touch screen,, the picture messaging will not function on this....

beezy,, i forgot to tell you that on myxer.com you need to specify your carrier as sprint not cricket or metro.. then change your sms address to 10digitnumber@yourcarrier.com then it will work

FLV files will not play on the built in media player,, thus youtube videos will not play...
youtube apps that connect directly to play will not work either because of cricket and metros proxy server blocking those ports..

data indicator will stay on no matter what,, it doesnt mean its fully connected,, its just dormant,, not eating battery...

I believe that the update is carrier specific,, meaning it was only applicable to update each thing through ota,, over the air,, with sprint...

in other words i dont think there is just a file you can flash...

but ive been known to be wrong.. just not very often.. lol

I have tried changing the ip address by using the nslookup and I am using the ip address it gives me, so I am pretty sure that is not the issue. If anyone has any suggestions it would be appreciated.

I am in the Kansas City market and it was a 172.028... The exact address is on my desk and I will post it when I get there, I just am not sure why it's not working. I took it from the phone after I hooked it up as a modem and from a wireless modem and both ip's matched. Just kinda stuck at this point because that would seem to be the only logical answer as to why it is saying connection failed. It does talk and text just fails when it trys to connect to the internet.

Has anybody gotten the WAP settings to work on a Samsung Glyde? Would these settings in the first post be the same as the Instinct? I am expecting my new phone back from Samsung (warranty swap) in the next week and want to be prepared to add the WAP as soon as it gets back.

ALSO, the MP3 player doesn't seem to work after the phone was flashed. Is this something that isn't available, or can't be available?

What is the gpsOne tab in QPST for?

That might have something to do with it, seeing how the phone can't access GPS data when opening the navi.

Maybe it needs to connect to a certain address, which would be entered in the gpsOne tab. Maybe the navi connects to a server to retrieve current GPS location. The tab also has a pull down PDE or GPS location calculation. :cray:

I have a samsung instinct flashed to cricket with working internet, got the internet to work the first day i got it and now it hasnt let me connect to any other site but the cricket portal. gives an error msg saying that i do not have access to the site. I read the thread about going to the cricket portal-email-gmail and done that but it says i have to have an account, and call customer service. ok ive seen alot of pda methods for getting the wap and mms for crgicket back how would i go about this on a motorola ve465 i have the monsterfile but when i try to use it on rsd lite it tells me not able to retrieve initilizations from ini file and i have no clue how to fix this i do have pst im an amatuer tho and need the exact directions on how to do this if anyone can help id appreciate itOk to all the folks that have a new phone or have hard reset the phone,, these settings will absolutely not get your browser past the provisioning state,, if your browser is trying to set up vision services and hangs,, it is because of this.. ill try to explain..

You see I reset the phone when I got it.. like a moron.. and after resetting it I never could get the browser to come up again,, it kept trying to update my account...
so here is what the deal is,, and how I think I got it back...

your browser doesnt know if you have your ppp settings installed or not..
it basically uses a policy,,

when the phone is new,, or reset,, when you open the browser it opens up a hidden NAI application in the background to provision your Sprint vision account,,, once the vision is updated,, it writes to the browser policy telling it it is complete,, then the browser will boot on its own without checking your vision data service... but this will not work on cricket since it is not on sprints vision service...
Sooooooooo... if this is your case... then following the steps Ive provided,,, start from the beginning,, but this time start clean,, go into qpst and clear all account info and ip address`s from M.IP and PPP config... then start from the very beginning and add it all back in,,,

then when completed , go to phone,, do the ##brew# enter spc
then youll see a bunch of little icons,, tap each one once while looking at the bottom of the screen,,, look until you see something that just says browser,, double click on this icon,, it may try to bring up your browser,, once you do this, back out and go back to brew and look for the icon that says sde_app there are a couple that say sde,, but use the one that says SDE_APP,, double tap on this it should bring up a list of like Start sde:addr start sde:mailto etc..
click on start sde:http and then I think you click browse,, the browser may or may not come up when you click this,, but i did this and after exiting brew it no longer tried to verify account,, it just brought the browser up properly like it should,, I dont know if it was a coincidence or what but it got it back..

i get error 2048 network busy i have an instinct ive tried everything three time lost contacts dont really care about that but I also tried to send pics no luck. can you explain to me why i have to change esn i got it flashed i paid for that phone is activated its a previous sprint phone activated on that network but im in houston tx i am trying to get it to pam phone as modem no luck times out but im sure that it has its time out interval in a certain amount of mins. so i will try tommorrow and wish me luck i updated prl i downloaded and did *2 updated fine
